Fourth Annual Des Moines Dirty Duathlon
Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009 (was Saturday, Oct. 24)
Greenwood Park, Des Moines
Des Moines’ fourth annual off-road duathlon is a non-profit venture supporting trail development in central Iowa. The race is presented by UME Compete and hosted by Capital Striders and Central Iowa Trail Association.
Schedule:
Registration opens at 10 a.m.
Beginner race at 11 a.m.
(Free) Kids race at 12:30 p.m.
Open/relay race at 1 p.m.
Note: we’re giving the beginner class plenty of time to finish this year!
Categories:
Open (men/women)
Relay (one runner and one cyclist)
Beginner (half-distance course)
Kid (under 12 years old; short course)
Courses:
UPDATE 11.12: We have changed the course a bit, adding a few hundred yards to each lap on brand new trail (thank you, volunteers!). The trail is so new, in fact, that we don’t have it mapped yet!
Starting in Greenwood Park, the courses navigate through Des Moines’ Center Trails — a 10-mile system of narrow, natural trails in the heart of the metro. The rolling terrain makes this event perfect for beginners and experts alike.
We are running the 2008 course backwards (clockwise) this year and shortening the open/relay category cycling by one lap.
Open/relay category course (map) distances are roughly 4 miles of running and 9 miles of cycling. The beginner course (map) will be about a 2 mile run and 3 mile ride. Kids will again do a short run and ride around the pond.
Awards/prizes:
We have gift certificates from Scheels and Bike World for the top men and women in each event — beginner, kids, open and relay. We also have a healthy pile of swag from Kyle’s Bikes, Bike World and Barr Bike we’ll distribute by random drawing.
Directions:
Ashworth Park is south of Grand Ave. in Des Moines on 45th Street. Parking is available at the west entrance of the Des Moines Art Center and along 45th to the entrance of the Bill Riley trail.
Thanks to Des Moines Park & Recreation for supporting this event.
You can register on Sunday starting at 10 a.m. Please check in more than 30 minutes before your race.
Thank you for supporting singletrack trails in central Iowa!

I would love to compete in the duathlon as a runner! I am an avid runner/road biker/triathlete, but I do not own a mountain bike of my own yet. Would anyone like to be on a relay team with me? Send me an email if you’re interested.
Hello Kristin. I am going to put the word out for you on the CITA yahoo list to see if anyone can team up with you or maybe even get you a bike. Check back here since I will tell them to post a message for you.
Cheers,
Ed

What are the rules for the different types of racing, Relay vs Tandem? If I sign up for Relay does one person run 3 miles then the other person rides 7 miles? Same question for Tandem. Does it matter how far they ride?
Relay is one person to do the running and another for the cycling. Tandem is two people doing the whole course together on one bike.
K, I understand that it is a relay. One person runs X amount of the route and another person rides Y amount of the route. So please fill in the X and the Y. Out of 10 miles, how many miles does the runner have to run (X) and how many miles does the rider have to ride (Y)?
Maybe i just didnt look in the right place but the DATE/TIME of the race is not clear.
Sorry about that Jubil. It has been added to the details above.
Saturday, Nov. 3 at 10 a.m.
Cheers,
Ed
I’m a beginner and only have a hybrid bike. Will that be ok on these trails? Also, what happens if it’s raining, or the trails are really muddy????
Wendy, I ride as much as I can out at Center and I wouldn’t ride hillside on a hybrid. I don’t think we have posted anything about “rain or shine” yet. But if it is wet ride through the mud. Not around it. You have plenty of time to go out there and try it. That might be the best suggestion so you can make your own desision based on your bike.
No race if muddy… Decision made on race day. We would reschedule if trails were muddy.
Last year I was dissapointed that time splits we’re not available for all legs and transitions for everyone. This is pretty standard fare for multi sport events. Hope you’ve thought about doing splits for people this year.
Oh, and we had a few racers last year on hybrids… One quit on the first lap. At least one of the others made it to the finish line but my memory is fuzzy.
If I were going to do this race on a hybrid, I’d get cyclocross tires and spend some time on the trails before race day. Safe and fun — that’s the goal, right?
I am going to be in town from Southern California, can I ride a cyclocross bike or is the descent of hillside to hairy?
I think Ryan mentioned that it is possible on a hybrid but he advised cyclocross tires and rising it first. An experience rider could do it I am sure. If you are going to be in town a few days before the event let us know and we can give you directions to the event and where hillside is.

Ed
Thanks Ed, I get in Friday night so there won’t be any preride for me. Just going to go for it!
If you see me out at the race say hello Dave. I ride an orange Gary Fisher X-calibur.
Cheers,
Ed
Thanks Ed, I will look for you. I will be wearing a blue and white uniform for Celo Pacific and probably will be rididng a orange Salsa Las Cruces.
Ed, after all that I am brining my mtn. bike. I will be on a carbon Giant NRS
The online registration is now closed for the Dirty Du. Thanks to everyone that registered early. Everyone else we have not forgot about you. Bring $30 the day of the event and you will still be able to register. Thanks and see you on Saturday!
Obviously helmets are probably strongly recommended, but are they required? If so, will there be any available to rent/barrow?
Something came up and I have to miss the event. I’m bummed. How/Where/When can I pick up the shirt and race packet stuff that I paid for. tks, Steve
I had never been out to Greenwood park but I thought the course was really cool. For future races, mile markers would be helpful. Also, will results be posted anyplace?
Wow, what a fun race! That was my first duathlon, and most likely not my last. The race was so neck and neck, with some fun lead changes. Next year, I hope you have your volunteers wear the race t-shirts or some thing recognizable and that you instruct them to yell at racers, or hold a sign indicating immediate or upcoming turns. Coming out of the flat MTB trails to the dike/bridge before the run, the corner marshal failed to notify me to turn left over the bridge. I road across the street and down the trail about 100 meters when I heard him notify other racers to turn left, thus I had to turn around, and go back trying to catch riders that I already had passed.
Thanks for a great race, see you next year.

Hey guys, I would consider myself a beginner, but i want to do the whole duathlon. Is the beginners the same length? and why do we start earlier instead of later than the open race? just wondering
Mr. Hunt: Race the open as you wish. ‘Beginner’ is half the distance of ‘open’. The races run separately because the courses are not the same. See you Nov. 2!

Mr. Hunt: ‘Route’ map is linked in the course description (and elsewhere) on this page.
Hi, I’m a mountain biker looking for a runner to do the relay with.
Thanks,
Chris
Where can the results be viewed?
Results will be posted here; give us a few days to get them together. Thanks!
Hi! Just another (friendly) ping about when/where the 2008 results might be posted? Thanks!
Servus,
Alex
Oh I found them…(they are at http://www.centraliowatrails.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/dd2008-web.pdf )
Thanks for a fun event!
Servus,
Alex
What direction does the course run? Does it run down Rollercoaster and the back up through Hillside or is it opposite? I wasn’t at the Dirty Du last year, so I don’t know what direction it ran then. Thanks!
Brett: course enters north end of Hillside and exits north end of Rollercoaster… Clockwise around the course map.
is online registration required or will registration be available the day of the event? will all beginner racers start at 11 or in intervals? thanks
For the person that was asking about riding a cross bike on the course. It will be doable, hopefully you are geared low and are a strong rider.
