2009 Summerset Shootout
COURSE UPDATED FRIDAY, MAY 29; VENUE DESCRIPTION ADDED
The Summerset Shootout is billed as ‘an extraordinarily challenging mountain bike race’ due to the technical difficulty of the course awaiting racers in Iowa’s newest state park — Banner Lakes at Summerset State Park north of Indianola.
Central Iowa Trail Association volunteers just completed over 4 miles of hand-built singletrack that wraps through the remains of an abandoned coal strip mine. In addition to steep climbs and descents, the trails contain constructed features like bermed corners, drops and log-overs on narrow tread that ranges from loam to sand to rock.
Racers are encouraged to ride these trails before the event. Everyone is encouraged to help put the finishing touches on these trails on Saturday, May 16.
RACE SCHEDULE
Pre-ride – 8:00am – 10:30am
Kids (13 & under) – 10:00am
Category 3 (Beginner) and Junior – 11:00 a.m., 1 lap, 4.6 miles
Elite (Cat 1/pro) – High Noon, 5 laps, 25.5 miles
Category 2 (Sport) and Singlespeed – Noon ‘o five, 3 laps, 15.3 miles
COURSE (updated Friday, May 29)
Kids will follow a .5 mile course including park road and flat singletrack. A Category 3 and Junior lap is 4.6 miles of park road and Easy and More Difficult singletrack, including a new trail called “Nude Beach” that was opened Friday, May 29. Category 2, Singlespeed and Elite racers will tackle 5.1 mile laps that add Very Difficult trails to the course and includes the new “Nude Beach” trail. Course remains subject to change on race day.
REGISTRATION
Registration is open the day of the race at 8 a.m. but online registration is strongly encouraged (and worth a prize). Entry is $20 (kids race free) and proceeds benefit singletrack trails in central Iowa.
AWARDS
The top male and female racer in each category will walk away with the Sheriff badge. The top 3 Elite men and women receive cash (which they can donate to CITA). Merchandise from Bike Country, Kyle’s Bike Shop, Oakley and Rasmussen Bike Shop will be distributed to the top 3 racers in each category and top racer in each age group.
VENUE
Summerset State Park has pit toilets and no running water . Also, the park’s wetlands are very good breeding grounds for mosquitos. Plan accordingly. Note that parking is available throughout the park, but we encourage racers to use the two big lots on west side of the park — one immediately inside the park entrance and another large lot as you drive south through the park.
